How you answer the question, “What do you do?” says a lot about you — and can even reveal whether you’re confident and happy with that identity.
“What do you do?”
Your response to that question says a lot about you.
It explains what you do with your time. It says what you consider yourself to be. And it can even reveal whether you’re confident and happy with that identity.
But an increasing numbers of workers — including a solid community of Brazenites — have more than one job, which can make it difficult to answer that question. More of us are turning to portfolio careers to earn a living rather than depending on a full-time job.
When I reported on this trend for U.S. News & World Report, I chuckled over what some of these multi-faceted workers call themselves: slashers. Makes sense, right? They hold one job/another job/yet another job.
Then, just a few weeks later, I became a slasher. Since leaving my day job earlier this month, I’m now a journalist/social media coach/blogger/soon-to-be-author/budding entrepreneur. Now I’m the one struggling with how to answer the happy-hour what-do-you-do icebreaker.
But I know exactly how to introduce myself to you all: I’m the new Managing Editor of this blog! You heard right — I’m joining the Brazen team. Along with Jaclyn Schiff, I’m now coordinating and editing our amazing group of contributors.
This gig fits well with my interests and experience. Not only have I covered careers and job-search strategy for U.S. News & World Report, I also write on my own blog about how to create the life you want to live. I’m fascinated by the changing world of work and how that affects Gen Y.
Our goal with this blog is to help you navigate that ever-changing workplace, including its myriad of career choices, from entrepreneurship to startups to the not-so-traditional 9-to-5. We want to be the place where you share out-of-the-box ideas, a community that discusses professional development, career hacks, lifestyle design and more.
In other words, as I figure out how to pave my Brazen path, I want to help you pave yours.
So I hope you’ll offer some feedback to help us accomplish that goal. What do you want to learn about here? How can we help you meet your professional and personal goals? What do you struggle with when it comes to getting your career where you want it to be?
