2.5 billion people are using chat messaging to communicate. Is your company following suit?
As a professional living in the age of the internet, chances are good that you have a messaging app installed on your phone. Chances are even better that you use your smartphone’s native text messaging feature to communicate with friends and family throughout the day. And if you’re reading this from an office, you probably also have some sort of internal messaging platform open — Slack, HipChat, or even good ol’ Gchat.
The evolution of human language is a truly fascinating phenomenon. Dating back to prehistoric times, changes in communication technology have taken us from pictograms to written speech to email and, ironically, back again in the form of emojis.
But arguably the most dramatic changes this past decade have been caused by the rise and ubiquity of online and mobile messaging.

The Rise of Chat
In a time dominated by unprecedented technological advances, the rise of chat as a dominant form of communication still stands out as one of the most explosive growth stories to date. Don’t believe me though — the numbers speak for themselves:
- Between March 2013 and March 2014 alone, the seven largest chat apps grew by 148% — that’s 900 million new users.
- In 2016, the combined user base for the top four messaging apps reached the 3 billion mark, surpassing the top four social media apps by a wide margin
- Of the ten most popular mobile apps in 2015, six were chat messaging apps.
- Today, about 2.5 billion people are registered to use at least one messaging app. By 2018, there will be 3.6 billion, or 90% of the world’s Internet-enabled population.
