Outside Magazine Announces 30 Best Places to Work in 2012
Sick of working for an employer that doesn't share your appreciation for work-life balance? Bring on Outside Magazine's 30 Best Places to Work in 2012. Outside says the list includes "enlightened companies [that] seek ambitious individuals who work hard, think big, and crave life-affirming careers, lunchtime bike rides, and soul-expanding travel." And these companies have policies that actually encourage employees to "spend time with their families, give back to their communities, and fulfill their passion for adventure." Are you waving your arms like a crazy, um, job seeker? Yeah, we thought so. At the top of the list is audio- and web-conferencing provider ReadyTalk, which is located in Denver and looking to hire account managers and salespeople. Emeryville, Calif.-based Clif Bar came in at No. 13; they're hiring for a food-safety specialist position. And Goal Zero, based in Bluffdale, Utah, was ranked No. 21. The company, which boasts a climbing wall on site, has openings for a mechanical engineer and a web-marketing director. That brings us to perhaps the most helpful feature of Outside's list: they let you know what types of workers each company is looking for. Well done, Outside! If you're on the hunt for a new a job, consider choosing one of these companies or another that seems like a good fit -- and pitching them, even if you haven't heard of any specific openings there. Tell the hiring manager why you're awesome and how you can help the company meet its goals. That proactive style of job-hunting is often more effective than responding to online ads (along with hundreds or even thousands of other applicants). Which of the companies on Outside's list appeal to you? Know of any other places to work that should've made the cut?
